Establishment of the Therapeutic Patch Test Tray and its Clinical Application

Abstract
Certain sensitizer seem to cause dermatitis in any country but many of them vary from one country to another. In recent years a number of different screening tests have recommended to identify frequently encountered allergens, since it is impossible to test all of them.
Furthermore, in Korea, there has been a tendency of increased sales of applied medicaments yearly which are sold without doctor¢¥s prescription. Therefore the author has tried to establish a therapeutic patch test tray fitted to our country investigating the sensitizers in 175 kinds of applied medicaments which were sold in Korea on 1973. The sensitizers in active ingredients in 175 kinds of applied medicaments were 78, and the sensitizers in bases and preservatives were 33.
The frequently appearing sensitizers in active ingredients were diphenhydramine HC1, methyl salicylate, camphor, menthol, resorcinol, sulfanilamide, thymol, nitrofurazone, chlorpeniramine maleate, hexacholorophen, neomycin, benzocaine, mercury bichloride, and P.P.D. These in bases and preservatives were stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, rosin, lanolin anhydrous, polyethylene glycol, turpentine oil, parabens and tocopherol. Author selected above 25 sensitizers as trial patch test substances for clinical evaluation.
The clinical evaluations were made on 20 cases of allergic contact dermatitis which were suspected probably due to applied medicamentosa. About 75% of allergic contact dermatitis could be detected the causative agents with these patch test substances. However, because of small tested cases, the further clinical evaluation of these selected patch test substances should be carried out.
